That was the day

make-love

I remember the first time I saw you
you were sitting outside City Drug
wearing layers of tattered clothes
protecting yourself from a harsh day
as temperatures fell along with snow.

That was the day I first realized
I could help someone in time of need
My life was complete with love abound
you were closing in on eighteen
then I saw you a few months later
and you told me the news
going in the army,defend
and your pride shined through.

I remember when you returned
you were sitting outside City Drug
holding a sign saying soldier
begging for money in the hot sun
you reeked of cheap whiskey and urine
missing both legs.

That was the day I began to protest wars..
